KFC Sweden is going for 50 % plant based by 2030

Djurens Rätt is working for a steep reduction of meat consumption in Sweden, to reduce it by more than 50 % by 2030. An important part of being able to achieve this is to get more food companies to switch from using animal proteins to plant based ones and to set clear goals for this transformation.

Djurens Rätt is therefore pleased to be able to share the news that KFC Sweden has promised to switch to 50 % plant based proteins by 2030. In other words, the company will switch from chicken meat to green alternatives. The transformation that KFC Sweden is planning would save the lives of around 500 000 chickens annually. Since KFC intends to expand to 50 restaurants in Sweden in the future, the decision will lead to a reduction of at least 1,7 million chickens per year, compared with the current sales levels.

It is incredible to see a company of this size, whose main product has been chicken meat for decades, is making a significant move towards plant based. This is an important progression for millions of farm animals, says Nathalie Söderström, Corporate Relations Manager at Djurens Rätt.

The launch begins with a lacto-ovo vegetarian product that will be released in June, but the plan is that vegan options will be available in the near future.

As Djurens Rätt previously reported, KFC has also chosen to work with the European Chicken Commitment, which is a list of welfare criterias for chickens that Djurens Rätt wants to see as a minimum level. The criterias mean, among other things, that companies say no to fast growing chicken breeds and say yes to at least 20 % free range.
